Our Principal

Roy Robles grew up in Newark, NJ during the 1980s, a time when US federal and state policies had led to the highest incarceration rate in any industrialized country, with a disproportionately high number of men of color behind bars. Simultaneously, the birth of Hip Hop and other urban art movements were engaging the community and inspiring young people to turn their lives in better directions. This important strike back against institutionalized disenfranchisement proved to Roy the power of the arts, and inspired him to pursue them in a variety of forms.

At the same time, he recognized that the current education system was failing children in his community. He has always believed education is fundamental to community liberation, inspiring him to become an autodidact with a strong Do It Yourself (DIY) philosophy. He is an accomplished woodworker, welder, carpenter, multimedia producer, photographer, musician, teacher, and more.

He sought out work that aligned with these principles. For three years he was an instructor and assistant department chair at Laney College, and spent more than a decade as the Senior Media and Technology Strategist at Career Ladders Project (CLP). At the same time, he and his family became involved in the Bay Area’s homeschooling community, where Roy taught woodworking sessions after school. In these years he saw firsthand the lack of visibility given to emerging artists and changemakers, and learned the full impact of engaging with his community directly.

In 2019, Roy started First Floor Group – a company built to serve the community through amplification, education, and a belief in self-sustainability.
